Since Cousins finds the coincidence of opposites in Bonaventure's Christology, Christology will retain our attention. II As they approach the question of the Incarnation, the Scholastics commonly ask if incarnation, or union to a human nature, is possible on the part of the divine nature.

coincidence of opposites at the base of Bonaventure's metaphysics. In the Itinerarium Mentis in Deum, reflection on the coincidence of opposites becomes part of the mystical ascent, leading the soul into the final stage of estatic contemplation.

When Zachary Hayes reviewed my book Bonaventure and the Coin- cidence of Opposites, he concluded with the observation: "It is a book that will prove to be controversial." 1 His remark was prophetic, for the book has evoked responses that aire both sympathetic and critical.

Two recent articles have appeared raising technical criticisms against my position by leading Bonaventure specialists:. Similar books and articles. Bonaventure and the Coincidence of Opposites. Lewis S.

Contribution à l'étude de la notion du vrai," verum", dans la pensée de Saint Bonaventure. THE COINCIDENCE OF OPPOSITES AND RELIGIOUS PLURALISM The notion of Christ as a coincidence of opposites holds import for the second axial period marked by religious pluralism and interrelatedness.

Bonaventure's integral relationship between the Trinity and Christ speaks of a God-world relationship that is grounded in love and relationality. Bonaventure’s coincidence of opposites helps break open the Christ mystery as one that engages plurality and difference. Based on this paradigm Christian life is to be lived as a center of unity and from a new depth of love.

This “coincidence of opposites” must provoke us to think beyond the usual genealogical dismissals that alert us to the caste/class provenance of the agents and their false consciousness.

Conversely, the faithful have used the same to assert their ‘Truths” and the triumph of the spiritual over the temporal.

Unity brings about the coincidence of opposites in each being. It is because of unity that beauty requires diversity. It is not that multiplicity and variety cause beauty; rather, beauty is the coincidence of the diverse entities in harmony.

This coincidence, however, occurs at differing levels. Throughout this book I have claimed that although the coincidence of opposites is the universal logic of Bonaventure's system, each major area of his thought has its own specific form of the coincidence of opposites based on the metaphysical structure of that area.

Throughout these lectures he developed the theme of this book, with its two major implications: the use of the coincidence of opposites for understanding Bonaventure's thought, first within the context of medieval culture and then in relation to twentieth century thought.

In my opinion this theme and its implications are of cardinal importance. A major context for the development of this book has been the series of Conferences on Medieval Studies sponsored by the Medieval Institute of Western Michigan University.

It was at one of these conferences, inthat I presented my first paper on Bonaventure and the coincidence of opposites. By tracing this pattern of the coincidence of opposites through distinct areas of Bonaventure's theology, including the Trinity, Exemplarity, and the Incarnation, the Christocentrism of Bonaventure's thought emerges.

Along the way, I also consider several arguments against the logic of the coincidence of opposites in Bonaventure. Access to society journal content varies across our titles. The coincidence of opposites, then, is the key to understand Bonaventure's thought. This is the thesis of the present book, and its aim is to spell out this thesis in detail by analyzing Bonaventure's texts and the structure of his thought. Bonaventure here is operating according to the coincidence of opposites, for he is uniting as opposites two personal properties which tradition has assigned to the Father: innascibility and paternity.

Bonaventure interprets these as opposites which not only coexist but which mutually require each other. employs the idea of 'the coincidence of opposites' as a tool for this task. This term, which first emerged in connection with Nicholas of Cusa's philosophy, was developed by Ewert Cousins, who applied it to the works of St.

This mode of thought was intrinsic to Francis' outlook, as the present study will show. It can be used.

(Ewert Cousins, Bonaventure and the Coincidence of Opposites ). One spe- cific locus of critique is Aquinas’s trinitarian theology: “Aquinas’s doctrine of God placed a firm emphasis on God’s esse over and above God as a Trinity of divine persons.

For Aquinas, God is absolute being and as absolute being, the. In my book I propose that the key to understanding Bonaventure's thought is the coincidence of opposites.

Both critics high light the fact that I distinguish three meanings of the coincidence of opposites and apply only the third to Bonaventure. The first is a monistic view in which opposites coincide to such an extent that they become one. served this purpose in Lefevre's mind Cusanus' logic of the coincidence of opposites, rooted in the divine infinity, is a fit instrument for contem-plative silence.

In terms of the usual operations of reason the principle is privative, since it deprives the mind of its rational concepts (called 14 De mys. theo., 1. Nicholas called this meeting of the infinite and finite the coincidence of opposites. And it became a way he thought of God’s being.

Reality, rather, is filled with contradictions, what Bonaventure () and others called “the coincidence of opposites.” [1] Bonaventure even found sacred geometry in the symbol of the cross: “For the center is lost in a circle, and it cannot .It is a “coincidence of opposites” (St.
